Non-Resident: Reciprocal Registration

Non-Resident: Reciprocal Registration

A nonresident home inspector planning to conduct home inspections in Arkansas must first apply for a reciprocal state registration.

Reciprocal Registration from Regulated States

Reciprocity may be obtained by nonresidents who hold, in good standing, a substantially similar registration in another state.

The applicant must provide:

  • Evidence of a current, active registration from another state.
  • Names of all states in which the applicant is currently registered.
  • Letters of good standing from each state in which the applicant is currently or has ever been registered.
  • Proof of successful passage of the National Home Inspector Examination and ASHI Standards of Practice and Ethics Examination.
  • Two home inspection reports.
  • COI (as described below)

Reciprocal Registration from Non-Regulated States

Reciprocity may be obtained by nonresidents from states that do not regulate home inspectors, if they are sufficiently competent in the practice of home inspection, which will be determined by review of home inspection reports by the Board.

The applicant must provide:

  • Proof of successful passage of the National Home Inspector Examination and ASHI Standards of Practice and Ethics Examination.
  • Four home inspection reports.
  • COI (as described below)

New Resident Automatic Registration

The State Board of Appraisers, Abstracters, and Home Inspectors shall grant automatic registration to an applicant who:

  • Is now a resident of the State of Arkansas;
  • Doesn’t have a disqualifying criminal offense;
  • Doesn’t have a complaint, allegation, or violation pending for his or her home inspector activity; and
  • Meets the following requirements:

    1. Has held, in good standing for at least one year, a home inspector registration issued by another state with similar scope of practice; or
    2. Has at least three years home inspection experience working in another state that doesn’t license home inspectors.

      The applicant must provide:

      • Letter of good standing from another state showing a current, active registration with no pending complaints.
      • COI (as described below)

        All applicants must provide proof of professional liability insurance (minimum $100,000) in the form of a Certificate of Insurance (COI)**, which must include all the following information:

    3. Your name and address as the insured (not your business, because we don’t register businesses).
    4. Name, business address, and telephone number of the local agent from whom you obtained the policy.
    5. Name of the actual insurance company (the carrier) providing the insurance.
    6. Coverage being provided (a minimum of $100,000.00 professional liability).
    7. The insurance policy number.
    8. The “State Board of Appraisers, Abstracters, and Home Inspectors, 900 W. Capitol Ave, Ste. 400, Little Rock, AR 72201″ named as the certificate holder.
    9. The beginning AND ending dates of the coverage.
    10. Signature of the issuing agent.
    11. Cancellation and notification requirements as specified in Ark. Code §17-52-318(a) & (b), i.e., All policies and certificates shall provide that cancellation or renewal of the policy shall not be effective unless and until at least ten (10) days’ notice of cancellation or non-renewal has been received in writing by the State Board of Appraisers, Abstracters, and Home Inspectors.)

**Please Note: It is the responsibility of the Home Inspector to provide the Board a current copy of the COI at registration and each year thereafter before the policy expires. Do not rely on your insurance company to provide it for you.
